Not as in jerky unnerving body movements,I'm talking about birds, baby, birds!
Yes, this renowned sleeper innerer has found herself getting out of bed at the crack o dawn and heading out with camera, binoculars and bird book in hand. And I love it! I'm sitting by Long Waterhole in Winton Qld, and have watched the red-kneed dotterels fluff around, a flock of budgies swoop along the water, a brolga do its graceful high legged walk and big groups of swamp hens peck for breakfast in the mud.
The 'Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds' has become my BFF on this trip and I am finding myself scouring any expanses of water and looking into
the trees at new campsites, noticing wether a parrot is ring necked or not and doing a happy dance when I spot a species that is deemed anything but 'common' in my book!
And the birdsong. Maybe that's the real thrill, the part that makes my heart swell and give a silent prayer of thanks for life. Lying in my tent in the morning, warm sleepy boys around me,listening to the the smorgasbord of song outside as the different birds follow their daily rituals. It is pure bliss and I don't even have to open my eyes to feel the day has already been worth waking for.
Yes, this trip has turned me into a bird nerd and I fear I will be twitching forevermore....
