Where do I start....Fernie, fair Fernie you have been our home for nearly three weeks. You have introduced us to exotic foods...

Picture

You have let us experiment with your varied and rapidly changing weather conditions...

Picture

You have introduced us to some wonderful, fun and fabulous people who live interesting and action packed lives...

Picture

And most of all you have made us fall deeply in love with the snow and the mountains and all they have to offer.

Picture

Thank you a million times to our Fernie family. If it weren't for you this would have just been a ski town.

Instead it has carved out a place in our hearts, become the home where we felt comfortable, safe, happy, inspired and warm.

And that is love.

Canmore

Being back in Canmore, Alberta was quite a surreal experience.

This town where I spent two of my most formative years holds such a big space in my heart it was almost like visiting an old lover that you are still a little in love with.

I had butterflies in my stomach and actually felt a bit nauseous as we drove into town.

The last time I was here was 13 years ago. The town has grown a great deal since then! New condo areas, a massive new recreation centre, many new restaurants and hotels made me feel quite lost at first. But then, all I had to do was look up at those magnificent mountains, get my bearings from the Three Sisters and Lady MacDonald and once again, I knew exactly where I was.

I took the boys on a chilly walk through the streets and we visited the site of my first business (a funky second hand store called 'Shazam!'), the pub I used to work at (The Last Call - and they still had my picture on the wall!!) and the house I first lived in (basement actually - we were on a budget;). We ate bagels at The Rocky Mountain Bagel Company and bought stamps from the corner store. We had dinner at the pub and played ping pong and darts with old friends. We swam in the fancy new pool which was so crowded (due to the outside temperatures I'm guessing) that you had to queue for 10 minutes to get into the hot tub! We got bags of goodies from the whole foods store 'Nutters' which had always been my favourite place to shop, and thankfully was still there.

And we looked in wonder at the mountains which encircle this town like a gathering of wise women around a small child. They are ancient and massive and timeless and so beautiful that several times tears of humility, awe and gratitude formed behind my eyes.

Thank you Canmore for being what you were then, and what you are now.

Canada eh!

We have experienced the full range of a Canadian Spring. Freeeeeeezing temperatures which made everyone (even the seasoned Canadian mountain folk) exclaim "geez it's cold eh!' while burrowing their noses into scarves and seeking solace in hot chocolate. Such cold! Eye watering, nostril hair crisping, try to use the iPhone with gloves on kind of cold. Exhilarating, exciting, jump up and down and stamp your feet kind of cold. Lets find an indoor activity kind of cold...

On such a day in Calgary we went to Drumheller, in the Badlands (LOVE how that sounds - so gnarly and western and adventurous) to check out the dinosaurs.

Picture

Alberta is a rich source of paleontology goodness and we examined the many local dinosaurs, ancient relics and beautiful fossils on offer in this wonderful Royal Tyrrell Museum.

Our amazing hostesses with the mostesses Jen and Wendy kept us warm with their kindness, great food and wonderful company. Thanks to you both for making our Canada initiation such a pleasant one! Landing in such extreme temperatures would have been really challenging without your hospitality.

But I have to admit, I am really glad that we all got to experience a real 'cold snap' like this one. Something most Aussie kids couldn't even imagine!
